The Safe Way to Meet People Online
by Dave Poon
Every minute, people from all walks of life connect to the Internet and thus, the Internet is a best place to meet lots of people--of different age group, gender, religion, likes and dislikes, interests, nationality, character and beliefs--all at the same time. Many people, old and young ones alike love meeting people online as this gives them the opportunity to learn of different cultures and interact with real people without the need to change locations. All you need is a computer, an Internet connection and you're on your way to meeting people online.
Whether you are in search for a friend, a business partner, a date, a lover or a lifetime partner, meeting people online can be fun, but many times, it can be risky too. Fist and foremost, there's no way for you to know whether the person you meet is telling the truth or not. You can only rely on your instincts. There are many opportunists online and the one you are talking with may be just one of them. It's too dangerous to enter into any commitment and transaction with people you only know about virtually.
For the sake of fun, experience and learning though, you can meet people online provided you know your limitations. There are certain things you should always keep in mind and things to avoid in meeting people online.
The first thing you should avoid is to divulge personal or very confidential information as those pieces of information you provide may be used against you. Especially with regard to financial aspects, do not easily give your trust to a person you meet online and give him your bank account number, electronic PINs and the like.
If your purpose is only to exchange ideas with another person, share experiences and beliefs, you don't have to give him details about yourself if he insists. And even if your purpose is to find a date, don't give in too quickly by telling him everything about yourself. Besides, you can test the person's sincerity when he values your decision and when he listens to what you say.
Second reminder is to always keep your eyes open to sings of fraud, cheating or obscenity. Don't get too engrossed by sweet nothings or mesmerized by his good looks (as seen in the webcam). Watch out if he is able to keep his story straight and consistent, if he repeatedly injects sex into your conversations, and if he is too demanding for private information and for things that you are not at ease with talking about.
If you want to avoid dangers in meeting people online, it would be best to enter sites that are known to be safe and user-friendly. Don't enter sites whose names are suggestive of something fishy. Also, use a nickname first (however choose a nickname that's appropriate and not sexually engaging), give him your disposable email as he might send you unwanted messages, and as much as possible learn more bout the person you are chatting with.
